Chasing two rabbits: Meditation and Training
One of my goal for this summer was to set a proper morning routine. Well, “proper” is so broad word though. Long story short, I failed. I was trying to do at least three simple things in the morning, and I barely was able to accomplish two of them.
My list so far:
- Wake up at the same time every day (7 a.m.)
- Eat good protein breakfast (eggs, spinach + Pu erh tea)
- Meditate at least for 10 min
I never ever had time for a meditation (You feel free to laugh at me here) and was frustrated with how I start my day. But then an interesting thing happened.
A bit of context here. I always start my day at the office not with reading emails or jumping into the tasks I am working on. I invented my small routine to get into the zone. I simply start with ten minutes session of touch typing training (thanks to my colleague Christian for introducing a good touch type training course to me)
So what exactly happened is that after I finished a training session, I started to feel myself as I would finish my meditation session. Of course, it is still different, and you cannot replace it with regular meditation completely.
I decided to practice it more and try to have these sessions as regular as possible and treat to them as they were my meditation sessions as well, where I focus on breathing and, well .. touch typing.
This is what exactly happens when I do it now:
- Focus — Since I only think about training, I am not able to think about anything else
- Flow state — My fingers flying (“flying” is still a very good word to describe this, hehe) over the keys and I feel how I let the impulses from the brain being turned into actions. It is a pure state flow. I simply love it!
And there is a sense of satisfaction. Each time I finish every session, I feel I accomplished something. I feel I made another tiny step to mindfulness and being better at something.
What I do now is trying to experiment with this more. I do this at coffeeshops, right after I wake up while listening some nice ambient music or when I have some downtime.
My goal is to see whether the motivation of accomplishing more in the same period will help to develop and maintain this habit. I also want to see whether I will be able to feel the same, whether it will add some real value in my life or this is just a mind trick? Time and data (oh yeah, I track this :) ) will show.
If you like it, drop me a message and say what you think. If you don`t like it, you are more than welcome to do the same :) I`d love to hear from you!
